Introduction

Introduction to Gynecomastia

Men are sometimes bothered by the appearance of what seems to be feminine breasts. Here at the Georgia Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua R. Groves, men from all over Macon, Warner Robins, Houston County, Bibb County, and the surrounding area can obtain a new outlook on life through gynecomastia surgery.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia refers to the development of female-like breasts in men. This condition may arise due to side effects from certain medications, disease, or excessive weight gain. Male breast reduction surgery is needed to restore the appearance of the chest, helping male patients achieve a more attractive, masculine appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery?

Men in Macon, GA, who suffer from gynecomastia also tend to have low self-esteem. Undergoing male breast reduction surgery can help men feel more confident, making it easier for them to pursue romantic relationships. Other benefits include:

  • Removes excess tissue, skin, and fat
  • Expands clothing options
  • Improves comfort and mobility
  • Long-lasting, natural-looking results

Who Are the Best Candidates For Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery could be an excellent option for you if you are embarrassed about your “man boobs” and have had little success reducing them through diet and exercise alone. You should note that enlarged breasts in men can occur even after reduction surgery if the underlying cause is not diagnosed and treated. For this reason, you should be committed to a healthy lifestyle that includes a regular diet and exercise to benefit truly.

step

What’s the First Step?

To help you get started along your journey to a more sculpted, streamlined upper body profile, Dr. Groves will meet with you for a private consultation at his state-of-the-art facility in Macon. This first session will entail an in-depth review of your cosmetic goals, a response to all your questions and concerns, and a thorough physical and medical evaluation. Once your surgery date has been set, the doctor may ask you to do the following:

  • Quit smoking at least 4-6 weeks prior to male breast reduction
  • Undergo additional medical testing if needed
  • Discontinue certain medications that could increase surgical risks
  • Fill all your prescriptions ahead of time
  • Schedule a friend, helper, or family member to drive you home after surgery and assist you for the first 1-2 days.

What to Expect on the Day of Gynecomastia Surgery

Male breast reduction surgery is similar in nature to a female mastectomy, which means it can be a rather involved procedure. Most surgeries take place under general anesthesia, which means you are fully asleep. This also means a longer recovery time and the potential for an overnight hospital stay. Gynecomastia surgery typically takes two to three hours, followed by monitoring in a recovery room for around the same amount of time.

Dr. Groves may employ one or both of the following techniques during your procedure:

  • Liposuction: Liposuction is performed to remove stubborn, excess fat from the body. It can be an instrumental tool in refining your chest appearance and creating a flatter, more conventionally masculine physique.
  • Excision: When liposuction alone is insufficient for contouring the chest, Dr. Groves will surgically remove excess skin and tissue to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing and balanced appearance.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

You may notice some swelling and discomfort for a few days after your male breast reduction surgery in Macon. Dr. Groves may prescribe medication to help alleviate your symptoms. A drainage tube could also be placed underneath your skin; if this is necessary, you must also take precautions to keep it clean and dry. You may also need to change your bandages regularly to allow your incisions to heal properly. Men must generally limit their activities for around four to six weeks after surgery as well.
