The procedure itself is done using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain during surgery. After the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising, tightness, or soreness around the eyes, but these symptoms are typically manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications. Cold compresses and keeping the head elevated can also reduce discomfort and accelerate healing. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how minimal the pain is and often describe the recovery as more of an inconvenience than a painful experience.

Blepharoplasty typically involves several key appointments to ensure your safety and satisfaction. After your initial consultation, you’ll return for a pre-operative visit, where you’ll receive detailed instructions to prepare for your procedure. On the day of your surgery, you’ll be under our care from start to finish at our Macon facility. Following your procedure, you’ll attend one or more post-operative appointments so Dr. Groves can monitor your healing, remove any sutures if necessary, and ensure your results are progressing as expected. Most patients require around 2 to 3 follow-up visits, although this may vary based on the extent of your surgery and your individual healing response.

Most patients begin to see noticeable improvements within 7 to 14 days, with continued refinement over the next few weeks. By the 4- to 6-week mark, your results should be well-defined, with eyelids appearing smoother, more lifted, and refreshed. The incisions are placed in natural creases and will fade over time, becoming barely noticeable. As long as you follow the aftercare guidelines provided by Dr. Groves, your recovery should progress smoothly, and your results will continue to improve.

Common combination treatments include a brow lift to smooth forehead wrinkles and raise drooping brows, or a facelift to tighten and lift sagging skin around the lower face and neck. Non-surgical treatments, such as Botox or dermal fillers, may also be added to enhance your overall results by addressing fine lines, volume loss, or crow’s feet. Combining procedures can reduce overall recovery time and produce more harmonious, balanced results across the face.

Potential risks include bleeding, infection, dry or irritated eyes, scarring, temporary blurred vision, difficulty closing the eyes, or asymmetry in the healing process. In very rare cases, more serious complications, such as vision loss, may occur, although this is exceedingly uncommon. A detailed medical evaluation will be conducted before surgery to ensure you are a suitable candidate and to identify any factors that may increase your risk. By carefully following all aftercare guidelines and attending your follow-up appointments, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of complications and ensure a safe, smooth recovery.
