Large breasts or macromastia can cause a series of symptoms including back pain, neck pain, headache, groove marks on your shoulders from your bra, or skin changes under your breast. Surgical correction of large breasts is called reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction. In this surgery, extra skin and breast tissue is removed from your breasts and your breasts are reshaped to give them a younger more natural look.
Before your breast reduction surgery:
During your consultation, Dr. Groves will discuss with you your surgical options. He will discuss the different incisions available, the type reduction most appropriate for you, and the pros and cons to each choice. With your input an appropriate surgical plan will be formulated that is unique to your individual circumstances. You will also be evaluated to determine if your surgery could be covered by your insurance.
Breast reduction surgery:
Breast Reduction surgery is performed in an ambulatory surgical center or hospital under general anesthesia. The surgery typically takes a couple of hours and patients are sent home the same day. No drains are used.
Breast reduction recovery:
Post Breast Reduction discomfort is managed with oral pain medication and close follow up will be performed by Dr. Groves. Usually, no sutures have to be removed since the sutures typically will be absorbable.
Patients typically return to work 1-2 weeks after their operation and aerobic exercise can be restarted one month after surgery.
