The most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States is Botox injections. Botox is derived from the bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. The brand Botox is purified Botulinum Toxin type A distributed by Allergan. It works by blocking the signaling mechanism the body uses to communicate between a nerve and its underlying muscle. The signaling mechanism is via a molecule called Acetylcholine. This blockade is reversible and the muscle recovers function in 3-6 months.
Botox helps eliminate the wrinkles in your skin by temporary blocking the underlying muscles function. Botox can be used as a preventative measure to help prevent wrinkles as you age.
The FDA has approved Botox for the wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes (crows feet), and around the mouth.
